Reasons Not to Celebrate Christmas

There are many reasons not to celebrate Xmas. These are mine:

• Christmas is steeped in lies (Santa myth, Yule log tradition, not the actual time of Christ’s birth!, the wise men are not numbered in Scripture and did not appear that night, etc.) Satan is the Father of Lies. Lies originate with him. Therefore I suspect that the Christmas holiday is of satanic origin.

• We are to be people of TRUTH. Jesus is the way, the TRUTH, and the life. God is looking for those who will worship Him in Spirit and in TRUTH. We are to walk in truth, and be a light of truth to the world. We cannot do this while partaking of a holiday that is not 100% truthful. We would not bend this rule in any other area of life. Why do so many bend it to take part in Christmas?

• The foundation of this holiday was pagan celebrations of the ‘rebirth’ of the ‘sun god’. Around the world, the ‘sun god’ is called by many names. His rebirth is celebrated every year at the winter solstice (3rd week in December). The winter solstice is one of the main holidays on the calendar of witches, even today.

• Catholicism is a counterfeit of the Bride of Christ. Catholicism has persecuted the true Bride. Catholicism, in its quest to obtain converts, allowed the heathen to keep their pagan festivals, and gave them a Christian veneer. Catholicism invented ‘Christmas’. We should have no association with the wickedness, false doctrines, and practices of Catholicism. Why do we link arms with them and celebrate their holiday every December?

• The Pope is a usurper and has no authority from God. There is no Scriptural record of ANY man EVER being given authority by God to institute any holy days on His behalf. In regards to worship, Deuteronomy 12:32 says: ‘What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.’ ** God has always given very specific instructions for how He is to be worshiped. No man has the authority to add to or diminish from them. When Nadab and Abihu offered incense with ‘strange fire’ before the Lord, He consumed them with fire and they died. This is an area where God has shown zero tolerance for man’s innovation.

• God tells us that we are NOT to model our worship of Him after the ways that the heathen worship their gods. ‘Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God . . . ‘

• Along the lines of not changing . . . God specified that He wanted no trees near His altar (Deut. 16:21). How would He feel about a decorated evergreen tree being an integral part of remembering Him in December? (There is more to the symbology of the Christmas tree that I will not explain here.)

• When godly men are faced with decisions regarding faith and practice, there are two opposing schools of thought. The ‘Regulative Principle’ says that God commands churches to worship using certain distinct elements and practices found in Scripture, and conversely, that God prohibits any and all other practices in public worship.. The ‘Normative Principle’ says whatever is not prohibited in Scripture is permitted in worship, as long as it is agreeable to the peace and unity of the Church. I would lean towards the Regulative Principle, having come out of mainstream Protestant Evangelicalism where 'anything goes' and seeing where that has led.

• Scripture does not teach celebration of Jesus’ birth. His birth was heralded by angelic messengers, but never again was any celebration of His birth mentioned. Jesus instituted a new practice, in remembrance of Him: Communion. This is the means by which God wants us to celebrate and reflect on Christ.

• A major focus of Christmas is gift giving. By linking Jesus with Christmas, He has been reduced from His biblical position of ‘Lamb of God’ (sacrifice of God) to a mere ‘gift’ from God. There is a world of difference between a bloody sacrifice of someone or something that is precious to you (thus very costly) vs. a gift that you give easily out of your abundance. Scripture never calls Jesus a gift. (Eternal life is the ‘gift’.)

• Scripture gives no example of the Apostles celebrating Christ’s birth, or taking part in any celebration similar to Christmas. In fact, the only mention of a similar celebration is in Rev. 11, where God’s two final prophets are murdered and left to lie in the street, unburied.: ‘And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.’ (Rev. 11:10). (Perhaps they too were ‘anti-Christmas’ . . . ?)

• The early church did not celebrate Jesus birth or the new holiday of ‘Christmas’, nor presumably did early Anabaptists. In fact, the celebration of Christmas was illegal in America until the 1800s. (Wording from a public notice: ‘PUBLICK NOTICE The Observation of CHRISTMAS having been deemed a Sacrilege, the exchanging of Gifts and Greetings, dressing in Fine Clothing, Feasting and similar Satanical Practices are hereby FORBIDDEN with the Offender liable to a Fine of FIVE SHILLINGS’ )

• The whole world, which Scripture tells us is under Satan’s influence, rejects Christ but loves Christmas. It is a very popular, worldly holiday. We are not being set apart when we jump on the bandwagon and join in the festivities and traditions.

• It weakens our testimony when we wrangle with non-Christians to ‘keep Christ in Christmas’, which was a pagan holiday to begin with, and remains so to this day, with its full complement of pagan traditions. The truth is, Catholicism co-opted a pagan holiday and added Jesus to it. And now ‘Christians’ are suing cities and non-believers to retain their ‘right’ to keep Christ in Christmas. We should be backing out gracefully and allowing them to have their pagan holiday without trying to add religious significance to it. Instead, we are mocked over the foolishness of it, because all the info presented here is widely accessible on the internet. While most Christians seem to turn a blind eye and not want to know, nonbelievers are well aware of the pagan roots and ownership of this holiday.

• Tacking Jesus onto a holiday that is not about Him cheapens Him and makes Him seem mythical. Many see Him as just a different version of the world renowned ‘sun god’, and consider His resurrection to be just another variation of the rebirth of the ‘sun god’ myth.

• God’s 7 Feast Days, given in the Old Testament, are laid out very explicitly, because they were to be living prophecies, repeated every year, foreshadowing the role of Christ in mankind’s story. Some have been fulfilled by Christ, others will not be fulfilled until His return. Christmas completely breaks this pattern and has superseded God’s Feasts in most people’s awareness. [Note: We do not believe God requires Christians to observe Old Testament feast days.]

• Christmas involves a counterfeit God. (See ‘Attributes of Santa Claus’). Although Christians may be celebrating a different way than unbelievers, the fact remains that the date and the name of the holiday are the same, and many of the traditions are shared. Christmas is an unholy partnership where both Jesus and Santa Claus compete for center stage. At best, this leads to confusion. God is not the author of confusion.

* ‘Christmas’ = ‘mass of Christ’. The Catholic mass is a blasphemous imitation of Christian communion. In the mass, the priest believes he crucifies Christ anew, and the wafer becomes the literal body of Christ (and the wine becomes His literal blood).

** Some people balk at the use of any Old Testament Scriptures to inform us on Christian conduct. But the Scriptures tell us that God does not change. What He despised 4,000 ago, He still despises today. His character is unchanged with time. If God hated something in the past, He does not ‘get used to it’ and learn to tolerate it with the passing of time.
